Release the Tension Cycle
Understanding Migraines & Headaches
Whether you suffer from classic tension headaches that feel like a tight band around your skull, or severe neurological migraines accompanied by light sensitivity and nausea, chronic head pain can make it nearly impossible to function.
While the root causes of headaches vary, a massive contributing factor is often chronic muscular tension. Long hours at a desk, poor posture, and emotional stress cause the muscles in your upper back, neck, and jaw to lock up. This restricts blood flow and traps nerves, referring sharp, throbbing pain directly into your head and behind your eyes. Therapeutic massage safely breaks this tension cycle.
The Benefits
How Massage Relieves Headaches
We use targeted myofascial release, deep tissue, and trigger point therapy to alleviate the structural compression that fuels your head pain.
Releases Suboccipital Tension
We target the tiny, over-stressed muscles at the very base of your skull. Releasing these frequently trapped nerves instantly reduces the referred pain radiating behind your eyes.
Reduces Migraine Frequency
Routine therapeutic massage significantly lowers cortisol (the stress hormone) and keeps the upper body relaxed, proactively preventing the physical triggers that spark a migraine attack.
Improves Neck Alignment
By stretching the chest and loosening the shoulders, we combat “forward head posture,” taking the heavy mechanical strain off your cervical spine that causes daily tension headaches.
Your Session
What to Expect During Treatment
Upper Body Focus
Expect your therapist to spend a significant portion of the session carefully working through your upper back, shoulders, neck, and even your jaw (TMJ) and scalp to find the exact source of the tension.
Trigger Point Deactivation
Your therapist will use sustained pressure to deactivate muscular knots. You may temporarily feel the pressure recreate your familiar headache symptoms—this is a “good hurt” that confirms we are releasing the correct trigger point.
Adjusted Pacing for Migraines
If you come in while currently experiencing an active migraine, let us know. We will dim the lights, use a much lighter touch, and focus entirely on soothing your nervous system rather than doing aggressive deep tissue work.
Hydration is Essential
Releasing severe neck tension flushes a large amount of metabolic waste into your system. Drinking plenty of water immediately after your massage is critical to prevent a “post-massage” headache as your body clears these toxins.
